DIY GPS Map System for Your Car

I’ve been considering buying a GPS map system to use when we travel.  Most of the time we travel, however, we’re going places that we know how to find so we’d not need one much.  Other than the Chicago area, perhaps, where road construction on I-80 seems to force us off of the Interstate for a while.  We are doing some driving over the Thanksgiving holiday to places where I don’t know my way around, but that wasn’t enough to push me over the edge to spend several hundred dollars on one.

Coolest-gadgets.com may have found an alternative that works for me.  They have directions for building a GPS map system using a Pocket PC, and GPS receiver, and map software.  It certainly looks like you can build a GPS map system at a cost on par with many dedicated systems and you’d have the Pocket PC for other uses as well.

I might just break down and do this, just for the fun of it.
